VP Debate
Palin put to rest any concern that she couldn't evade a question. All politicians do it but it was more painfully obvious in this debate than usual. I had to break out the Port to numb the pain.

It is really odd to see Republicans trying to pretend they are Democratic. Suddenly the Republican party is all about regulation. I recall reading that the instant polls of the first debate gave McCain the highest ratings when he talked about opposing his party. I guess that was the focus group result Republicans went with in this debate. Anyone who drank every time the word "Maverick" was repeated is dead from alcohol poisoning.

Did Palin actually come out in support of gay equality (civil unions or legal equivalence for gay relationships)? Should we expect a correction tomorrow or just Republicans hoping none of the social conservatives took her seriously? I think it would be too optimistic and take this as another social conservatives surrender.

i don't think she understood what was meant by hospital visitation, or what the other issues are that come up when people aren't married/civil unionized (my word). but that could just be me projecting my preconceived notion upon her answer.

It was one of those points you really wish the moderator could follow up and clarify. Either she was supporting civil unions (under whatever name) or she didn't know what she was saying. I suspect she was just trying to string talking points together and didn't know what she was saying.

My roomate and I reached a point at which we were cringing at the sound of her voice, her mannerisms, and plastic smile.

I was just too fascinated to break out any booze.

I was actually impressed by Biden. The guy seems to have encyclopedic knowledge of congressional votes during the past 20 years. In fact, he was downright presidential.

I don't think she understood the meaning of the expression Achilles Heel or knew about Cheney declaring himself as not part of the executive branch. Biden made her look painfully uninformed without coming across as demeaning, but I think it was his choking up recalling the death of his wife and kids was a very sincere moment and connected with Americans more than all the you betchas and doggone its ever could. I think it actually may have been the turning point in this whole shindig.

There's a difference between saying "I don't support legislation that would prevent hospital visits and other such things that gay couples have legally set up for themselves" and "I am in favor of creating/backing legislation to make it easier for them, like letting them have civil unions."

We watched it on CNN and were shocked out how many points Palin was racking up from the analysts. We asked ourselves if they were watching the same thing we were. It's so clear we all have ingrained biases, even if it's our job to be fair.
