California Supreme Court Rules For Marriage Equality
Some great news!
We therefore conclude that in view of the substance and significance of the fundamental constitutional right to form a family relationship, the California Constitution properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil right to all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to opposite-sex couples.
Culturally this may matter much more than previous gay marriage rulings. This clears the way for Hollywood celebrities to get married. Given our cultures celebrity obsession expect to hear about gay marriages in the news more frequently. As the experience of Massachusetts has shown, once gays are getting married and the sky isn't falling, the opposition to marriage equality starts to crumble.

the sky isn't falling,

Yet.

Clearly you're unaware of the small minority of paleontologists who believe the KT impact was due to gay dinosaurs getting married.

And let us not forget Big Science which won't let kids learn about the "gay dinosaurs impact theory!" =)

I like telling people that MA kicks ass for being the first state to allow same-sex marriages, but it never had the resonance I was hoping. You point out something very valid: California is much more noticeable than MA. As soon as Hollywood types start tying the knot people will start to realize that the world isn't coming to an end.

And I have to say I like their absolutely awesome governor, who despite his personal beliefs will not oppose the court's ruling.

It's too bad they didn't have a ton of weddings today, like happened in MA. I think that so many ecstatic people--especially the really long term couples who could finally get married--really made an impact. The dissenting populace saw that marriage truly is about people being able to express their love for their partner (not trying to offend the polyamorists--won't even go into multiple marriages here--so long as those jackasses in texas keep marrying 13 year old girls to their 50 year old cousins, they'll never allow polygamy back on the books). by the deadline for overturning the ruling, almost no one made a fuss about going backwards.
