2008-06-06-17:23 - VP Silliness
There are a lot of odd ideas floating around the internet and perhaps even office conversation on the subject of Vice Presidents. The one that has been making news lately is that Hillary should be Obama's running mate. There are a lot of reason this isn't a really good idea. Her consistently high unfavorable rating being the one that springs to mind first.
The other weird idea I've heard is that McCain might choose Joe Lieberman as his running mate. This idea might be worse than the Hillary VP plan (at least from McCain's perspective). McCain and Lieberman agree that the the only thing better than the war in Iraq they supported, is the war in Iran they are planning. However, outside of pro-war foreign policy there isn't a whole lot else they agree on.
Given McCain's age (71) and his history of cancer (he had cancer surgery last Feb) there is a very real chance than if elected his VP might serve out his term. A Lieberman running mate would both highlight McCain's health issues, and cause McCain serious problem with the GOP base. McCain already has problems with movement conservative. It would get much worse if they knew voting for him might put in a VP with a 100% rating from NARAL.
So my predictions (please consult my handle for how much faith I think you should put in them)... Obama will not choose Hillary Clinton to be his VP, nor will McCain choose Joe Lieberman to be his runningmate. But if elected either of them might find there way into the cabinet. Or in the case of Hillary perhaps the Supreme Court.
